SPEED RACER

SPEED RACER

in honor of 4.20, i thought i'd write a little about this movie that many have casted off as a pile-o-shit. well, the story might not be all that well, but visually this movie is nuts. i saw it for the first time this past week and i was stunned. all the racing scenes are one long trip, the effects are insane, and matthew fox plays a total badass as racer x. so in honor of this day gather the turkey, light up, and enjoy this 2 1/4 hour trippy feature.

ALL THE SAINTS - FIRE ON CORRIDOR X

ALL THE SAINTS, a psychedelic trip-fest, is quickly becoming something to remember. their 2008 release Fire on Corridor X (touch & go), is a powerful display of psychedelics, emotion, and tone. certain tracks have a feeling of floating into the air and then being forced down with a violent thrust ("farmacia"). other tracks are a great display of their ability to be soft and beautiful ("leeds") on an album chalked full of intensity. very impressive band with a very impressive debut.

THE HUSSY, based out of Madison, WI is the next thing to fuck your mind. seriously, if you see these guys live your mind will be fucked. it may be their compacted songs that are a raging 2:13 at the longest. or just the fact that they are the loudest thing i've ever witnessed in person. no matter where you see them, you'll remember them. this piss 'n vinegar rock 'n roll 2-piece is intense, fun, and even quite trippy. made from the ashes of former Madison band Cats Not Dogs, Bobby Wegner (guitar/vox) & Heather Sawyer (drums/vox), decided to do it all on their own. and that they did. having now released their Winter Daze 7" in Europe on A Fistful Of Records and their recent split 7" with Sleeping In The Aviary (Madison WI) on Science of Sound, The Hussy are getting some well deserved attention. having known Bobby Wegner for years (often fucking around making our own music in his basement during high school), both these releases are creative, hard hitting masterpieces we both dreamed of making. well, they did, and they did it well.

THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART may be the new pitchfork jerk-off band of early '09, but i find that they might be worth all of that jerking off. with all of it's fuzz pop, their early '09 S/T release really may be the real deal. there are a few dull spots, like the first track ("contender"), but it picks right up with "come saturday" and what might be my favorite songs of '09 so far ("this love is fucking right" & "everything with you"). whether you are into the noisiness and emotion of the aforementioned songs or the softness and driving sounds of the others, this album has about everything one could want. about. not quite the greatness of what it might be made out to be, but still sufficiently good.
